Description: This is a fascinatingly different Clematis from northern China and islands north of the Japanese mainland. A moderately vigorous climber, it bears most unusual flowers. Opening from matching top-shaped buds, they are urn-shaped and composed of four, deeply ribbed petals covered on the outside with short, woolly brown hairs, giving the bloom an appearance of being fashioned from fairly rough suede leather. But it is the unusual colour that will attract most comment – a deep, almost dusky, unique violet which is strangely matched by the creamy green stamens.
Height: 200 cm.
Flowers: may-jun
Type: HP
Hardy in: zones 4 to 9 (-20 Celsius)
Sowing instructions: Wintersow in sep-oct. Stir every now and then. Germination should happen in spring.
Planting instructions: Head in the sun, feet in the shade. Lots of compost!
